Constitutional Mandate

The constitution says that the government has an obligation to transform the economy into one that does not discriminate, that protects and respects the dignity of each person and steadily improves the standards of living. ECDC‘s mandate is to plan, finance, co-ordinate, market, promote and implement development of the Province and its people in the fields of industry, commerce, agriculture, transport and finance. ECDC, in its current form, emerged due to the merger of the following development finance institution

About Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape, Home of the Legends! 

A vibrant province of unmatched beauty boasting a wealth of natural resources, and a world-class manufacturing industry with a leading automotive manufacturing industry in South Africa. The Eastern Cape boasts with abundant tourist attractions, 800km of pristine coastline, world-renowned biodiversity and moderate climate with mostly sunny days.

 

The province’s three international ports and airports have competitive logistics for investors and provide easy access to regional and international markets. Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), a provincial economic development and investment promotion and facilitating agency offers formidable support to investors, with the two renowned Special Economic Zones; East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) and Coega Development Corporation (Coega) with the support of the shareholding government department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

 

ELIDZ offers investing industries a streamlines business environment enhanced by range of supporting services. The ELIDZ houses about 40 manufacturers that supply products for local and international markets and is perfectly positioned for light industry manufacturers that invests from +/- $1.2m. It is positioned in close proximity to the four ECDC owned Industrial Parks which are developed for growth-oriented manufacturers in search of ultimate global competitiveness. These industrial parks are Vulindlela, Fort Jackson, Butterworth, and Ndimbaza Industrial Parks, as well as Queendustrial Industrial Parks. 

 

A leading investment destination and #1 in Africa, Coega is demarcated into 14 zones and operates the 9 003-hectare Coega SEZ with a combined investment value of R11.63b to date. The SEZ provides competence and capacity for the execution of complex infrastructure, and advisory on the development of industrialisation and logistics zones, focusing on various sectors.

The SEZ and Industrial Parks are hosted by two competitive metro municipalities; Buffalo City Metro and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, both with advanced capabilities and enablers of vibrant economic activities.

The Eastern Cape is a home to four public universities as well as University of South Africa (UNISA) which has a national footprint, as such its graduation figures are reported under Gauteng province. The diverse offering of the Eastern Cape universities makes the province a sought-after educational destination. Statistics show that in 2019 alone, over 19 000 university graduates entered the labour market from the four local universities.
