ECDC Reclaims Illegally Occupied Properties in Mthatha

The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) today launched a multi-stakeholder operation in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and specialised security teams to reclaim invaded properties in Mthatha.

The operation commenced at the Fort Gale flats and the Windsor Hotel. It will extend to all ECDC properties that are illegally occupied. While no evictions took place today, the ECDC has obtained eviction orders from the courts and will move forward with the eviction of unlawful occupants in accordance with these legal directives.

The operation was conducted in full compliance with legal prescripts and is aimed at restoring lawful control, safeguarding public resources, and support tenants transitioning to legal occupancy. Collaborative efforts with the SAPS, specialised units, and other stakeholders ensured a smooth process, with no resistance or violence reported.

Key milestones included the distribution of trespass and/or illegal occupation notices, and distribution of tenant application forms for qualifying tenants who wish to secure legal lease tenancy agreements. ECDC CEO Ayanda Wakaba affirmed the Corporation’s commitment to restoring order and ensuring these properties serve their rightful purpose.

ECDC calls on stakeholders, communities, and the public to support this initiative, which will unlock economic value, create jobs, and improve the quality of life in Mthatha and beyond.
