EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENT: Pumeza Bija



Pumeza joins the ECDC as Head of Legal, Compliance, and Governance, bringing over 20 years of diverse legal experience.


Her distinguished award-winning career spans roles as an attorney, labour specialist, lecturer, mediator, presiding officer, board member, and accredited commissioner for the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and bargaining councils. Her expertise includes governance and leadership across the public and private sectors.


Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Jurisprudence (BJuris), a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Labour Law. These are complemented by specialised training in CCMA Commissioner Training, Judicial Skills for Aspirant Judges, and Judicial Skills for Aspirant Regional Court Magistrates.


Pumeza has also served on the boards of the ECDC and the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, where she played a pivotal role in advancing strategic governance initiatives.


She champions excellence, continuous improvement, and innovation, aligning with ECDC’s mission for sustainable development and good governance. Her philosophy centres on ‘paying it forward’ and fostering positive change within the legal community.


In her new role, she will enhance governance frameworks, foster compliance, and implement strategic legal initiatives to make a transformative impact in the Eastern Cape.
