OR Tambo Region -
17 April 2023 -
DEDEAT partners with DSBD, PSJ and Ingquza Hill LMs to hand over infrastructure and working equipment to informal businesses
The OR Tambo region of the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) in partnership with the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), Port St Johns (PSJ) and Ingquza Hill Local Municipalities will be handing over business infrastructure, machinery and equipment to informal business owners in Port St Johns and Flagstaff on the 18 and 21 April 2023 respectively.
DEDEAT will be handing over the equipment under Informal Business Support Programme (IBSP) implemented through its implementing agency, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC). Whilst DSBD handover of infrastructure such as hawkers’ stalls is implemented under the Informal Micro Enterprise Development Programme. Both programmes are aimed at assisting informal traders to formalise their businesses and improve trading operations. As such these programmes provide various forms of support to informal traders, including necessary resources, training, mentorship, access to finance, and market linkages.
This handover is a demonstration of the District Development Model (DDM) in action, as national, provincial, and local government departments; agencies and business collaborate towards common goals in a coordinated and integrated manner.
The province, through DEDEAT, is also in the process of reviewing its policy framework for informal businesses to ensure continued support for micro and informal businesses located in townships and rural villages in line with the Provincial Informal Business Strategic Framework 2019-2024.
