The ECDC is delighted to participate in activities which celebrate the life of Tata Nelson Mandela whose life was the epitome of democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation and respect. The Mandela Day activities are aligned to the ECDC mandate anchored on driving sustainable socio-economic development.
At Chumani Primary School in Reeston, the ECDC team handed over uniforms, school shoes and dignity packs to 47 learners in Grades R, 2 and 3. The learners received uniforms which include white shirts, grey trousers, jerseys and shoes. The dignity packs include bath soap, wash cloths, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, body lotion and sanitary towels for each learner.
“Our intervention at Chumani Primary School is in line with the ECDC’s overall objective which includes improving the lives of disadvantaged communities in the Eastern Cape. Mandela Day provides another platform for the ECDC to contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic life of Eastern Cape communities, particularly disadvantaged groups. We are happy the school management allowed us the opportunity to contribute to the lives of its learners,” says ECDC Executive Manager: Corporate Services Lulama Mbobo-Vava.
Twenty-four (24) Bulumko Senior Primary School learners received school uniforms, shoes and dignity packs from the ECDC as a contribution to international efforts being rolled out in honour of the life and legacy of former statesman and global icon Nelson Mandela. The 24 learners received uniforms which include white shirts, grey trousers/white dresses, jerseys and shoes. The dignity packs include bath soap, wash cloths, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, body lotion and sanitary towels for each learner.
“Nelson Mandela’s life was a gift from God and a shining example of humility and sacrifice. He dedicated his life to the attainment of a better life for all South Africans and the disadvantaged throughout the world.
His example resulted in a global celebration of his legacy. Today, we undertake this charitable initiative to honour his humility and sacrifice. The ECDC’s contribution at Bulumko is in response to a need that was identified by the teachers at the school, which included school uniforms. We are pleased that we have been able to make a difference to the lives of these learners today,” says ECDC chief executive officer Ayanda Wakaba.
